Grand Canyon or Bust…and the Life of a Couch Potato!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I will have to admit that for the last month or so I have enjoyed the life of the couch potato!  I have sat around eating Christmas cookies and bon-bons and hanging around the house.  Although this was quite enjoyable for a time it is really not me and I have decided …. it is time to get moving!!

This year I have decided that it is a “DO” year!  No more broken resolutions.  I am going to do what it is I have wanted to do and for years it has been hike the Grand Canyon!  So, I have paid my down-payment, recruited my wonderful brother and some great friends and in September we are doing it…Rim to Rim!  We will be going down the North Rim and back up the South.  I am so excited and well… a bit nervous so I am officially off the couch!

I have recruited even more friends and after work each day we are walking/running Signal Hill.  For those of you who are not from this area, Signal Hill is its own City in the middle of the City of Long Beach.  And it is just that a “Signal” hill right smack in the center with what I might add is quite the HILL.  For those of you who would like to check it out it has a very interesting history

Now this has been great! Well, you know as far as hard workouts are concerned and some of the guys from work are tough so we are really working out.  And this as a side-note is really what I suggest;  GET SOMEONE TO DO IT WITH YOU!  It truly makes you accountable.

Now to add to this workout I have also signed up for a hiking club in my area that does several hikes every week.  This is due to a great idea by one of my best friends Shawnmari (she has a great website too check it out http://www.biopsycheducation.com/ ) and again…GET SOMEONE TO DO IT WITH YOU!  This is a great group!  Not only do they do hikes all over our area but they are a non-profit too!  This non-profit helps to get kids out in the fresh air and in tune with nature!  Fantastic…I think our kids these days really need this and I am willing to support it.  But it is also FREE, so you can either make a donation or if you are struggling you can join in for FREE!  I am sure there is lots of things like this in your area so take a look www.meetup.com is a great place to start.  But the name of this group is www.OCHikingClub.com and we are having great fun!

So I have to admit I have a long way to go before I hike the canyon and carry a 35 pound pack on my back, but I am well on my way!  So I want to help all of you get started too.  So I will be sharing my adventures with the hiking club, the hill and just plain getting in shape with you on my website!  I hope this will motivate you and get you off the couch too!  After all if an almost (a really big age coming up this year) __ year old (not sure I can say it out loud yet), cancer survivor and a couch potato can hike the Grand Canyon, you can do something every day too!

So let’s get started together!!  For the next weeks I will try and post sites that help with exercising and nutrition.  Starting this week, along with the OC Hiking Club and Meetup, I will post some sites for Dragon Boating around the world.  After all this is a great sport and all teams are willing to help out those who have never done it before and get them in shape.  You will be racing in no time!

  And all cancer survivors welcome!!

So check out these sites
